In a study published in the British Medical Journal, researchers identified 12 drugs and antibiotics that were not part of the drug class, but that patients had a greater risk of developing side effects. In particular, the drug class was associated with a lower risk of developing infections and a lower likelihood of getting sick. One of the antibiotics, penicillin G, was also associated with a lower risk of side effects. However, the drug class was not found to be associated with an increased risk of dying from respiratory disease or pneumonia.

In contrast, another drug, amoxicillin, was associated with a lower risk of developing a serious respiratory infection and a lower risk of developing a serious lung infection. A third antibiotic, clindamycin, was also associated with a lower risk of respiratory tract infections.

The findings suggest that patients who are treated for respiratory infections should be monitored closely and should be given specific antibiotic drugs. The risk of developing a serious respiratory infection should be considered as well.

The authors of the study, from the University of Pennsylvania, and colleagues, were part of a larger study designed to evaluate the impact of drugs, such as antibiotics, on the development of respiratory infections.

The study was funded by AstraZeneca, AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP, Eli Lilly and Company, and Novartis Pharmaceuticals LP. The authors are alsoresidentsand are members of the American College of Physicians’ Committee on the Safety of Pharmaceuticals.
